Ceremonial Cacao Solid Block vs Fresh Ground Which One Is Right for You
Share
There is a question we hear often.
Solid block or fresh ground what is the difference and which one should I choose? Both are 100% pure ceremonial cacao paste. Both come from the same native Criollo cacao grown by Q'eqchi families in Cahabón, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. Both are crafted by Indigenous Kaqchikel women in San Marcos La Laguna. Both carry the same intention, the same origin, the same integrity.
The difference is in the experience of preparation. And that difference matters more than most people realize.
The Solid Block
The solid block is ceremonial cacao paste in its most ancestral form.
After the cacao is ground, it is poured into molds and allowed to set into a dense, firm block. Nothing is added. Nothing is removed. The natural cacao butter holds everything together, giving the block its smooth, almost glossy surface and its characteristic weight in your hands.
To prepare it, you chop or grate the block usually one to one and a half ounces per serving. The act of breaking and grating the block is itself part of the ritual. It is slow. It is intentional. It connects you to the process in a way that a powder or pre-ground product never can.
The solid block also has a longer shelf life because the cacao butter acts as a natural preservative. Stored in a cool, dry place it keeps its quality for months without refrigeration.
This is the format preferred by facilitators, practitioners, and anyone who wants the full ceremonial experience from preparation to the last sip.
The Solid Block is for you if:
You want the most complete ceremonial experience
You prepare cacao as a daily ritual and enjoy the process of preparation
You want a product that travels well and keeps for longer
You are a facilitator or practitioner who prepares cacao for groups

The Fresh Ground
Fresh ground ceremonial cacao starts as the same whole bean cacao as the solid block but undergoes an additional handmade grinding process.
It dissolves more easily and requires less preparation time. Add your serving directly to hot water, whisk, and your cacao is ready. The experience is smoother and faster, without sacrificing any of the compounds that make ceremonial cacao different.
Theobromine intact. Flavanols intact. Magnesium intact. Cacao butter intact.
Fresh ground is ideal for people who are new to ceremonial cacao and want an accessible entry point. It is also perfect for morning routines where time matters — when you want the ritual without the extended preparation.
The Fresh Ground is for you if:
You are new to ceremonial cacao and want an easier preparation
You have a busy morning and want your ritual to be quick and simple
You prefer a smoother texture that dissolves easily
You want to take your cacao on hikes, travel, or outdoor rituals

Same Origin. Same Intention. Different Experience.
Both formats come from the same source the same seed, the same soil, the same hands.
At Maya Moon Cacao, we do not believe one is superior to the other. We believe each person finds their way to cacao through a different door.
Some come through the solid block the crack of breaking it, the smell of grating it, the slow ritual of preparation.
Others come through the fresh ground the simplicity, the accessibility, the ease of a morning cup that still carries everything the plant has to offer.
Both are ceremonial.
Both are real.
Both are whole.
The question is simply which door calls to you today?
